Bhubaneswar: In a decisive move to ensure an uninterrupted drinking water supply ahead of the summer heatwave, the Odisha government has directed immediate repair of 186 defunct tube wells across the state within 48 hours.

Panchayati Raj and Drinking Water Minister Rabi Narayan Naik informed the Assembly that Odisha currently has 537,204 tube wells, of which 537,018 are functional.

The repair drive aims to restore the remaining non‑functional units swiftly.

Highlighting recent progress, the Minister noted that 27,335 new tube wells have been installed statewide over the past two years, including 2,763 in the Koraput district.

Koraput alone has 18,676 tube wells, with 18,671 already functional. Repairs are underway for the remaining five.

The initiative underscores the government’s preparedness to tackle water scarcity during the upcoming heatwave and its commitment to strengthening rural water infrastructure.
