Odisha Govt Launches ‘Oil Board’ to Promote Healthy Eating in Childcare Centres
The Odisha Government has rolled out a unique initiative to curb the rising health risks associated with high-oil foods.
District collectors have been directed to install “Oil Boards” at Anganwadi Centres (AWCs), Child Care Institutions (CCIs), One Stop Centres, Shakti Sadan, Shakti Nivas, and other residential facilities.
These boards will display the approximate oil content in popular fried snacks such as samosa, pakora, and aloo chop, alongside warnings about health risks linked to excessive oil consumption—including heart disease, obesity, fatty liver, and high blood pressure.
To ensure accessibility, the Department of Women and Child Development (WCD) has mandated bilingual boards in Odia and English.
A prototype design has been shared to maintain uniformity across districts, while institutions may use contingency funds to cover printing and installation costs.
The initiative underscores Odisha’s commitment to public health and nutrition, particularly among vulnerable groups.
By promoting healthier food choices and reinforcing behavioural change, the government aims to instil awareness among children, caregivers, and communities about the importance of balanced diets.
