Odisha Glows with Devotion as Makar Sankranti Unites Communities
Bhubaneswar: Odisha came alive with devotion and festive fervour as people across the state celebrated Makar Sankranti, marking the Sun’s transition into Makara Rashi (Capricorn).
The festival, which heralds the auspicious period of Uttarayan, saw devotees throng temples, riverbanks, and sacred sites to take holy dips, offer prayers, and perform rituals.
At the Jagannath Temple in Puri, special offerings were made, including the symbolic Makar rice brought by Goddess Lakshmi to Lord Jagannath.
Temple authorities and district administrations ensured smooth arrangements to accommodate the large gatherings.
In Mayurbhanj, the festival was observed as a community celebration with new clothes and traditional delicacies, while southern Odisha marked Bhogi, an associated festival.
Berhampur witnessed extended three‑day festivities, particularly among the Telugu community, highlighting Odisha’s cultural diversity.
Makar Sankranti in Odisha is not just a religious occasion but also a celebration of harmony, collective joy, and shared traditions that unite communities across the state.
