Odisha Forms SIT to Probe Fake Motor Insurance Claims | Supreme Court Informed
The Odisha government has constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe fraudulent motor vehicle insurance claims, following concerns raised by the Supreme Court.
The SIT, led by Crime Branch Inspector General Sarthak Sarangi, has already identified 104 suspicious cases, of which 70 have been confirmed as fake.
Advocate General Pitambar Acharya informed the Supreme Court about the SIT’s progress during a recent hearing.
Authorities revealed that in four cases, beneficiaries had already received payouts despite the claims being fraudulent.
So far, five individuals—including an advocate—have been arrested in connection with the scam. The case reached the apex court after Oriental Insurance Company filed a petition seeking a thorough investigation.
The Supreme Court appreciated Odisha’s swift response and detailed probe, noting the importance of curbing fraudulent practices in the insurance sector.
The SIT will continue its investigation to uncover the wider network behind the scam and recommend legal measures to prevent similar frauds in the future.
