Odisha Fertiliser Crisis: BJD Urges Governor to Act Against Black-Marketing

Bhubaneswar, Sept 20, 2025 — In a decisive move to address the escalating fertiliser crisis during the Kharif season, a delegation of Biju Janata Dal (BJD) leaders met Odisha Governor Dr Hari Babu Kambhampati today, demanding immediate intervention to safeguard the state’s agricultural backbone.

The delegation submitted a detailed memorandum outlining the plight of farmers across Odisha, who are grappling with long queues, inadequate supply, and rampant black-marketing of subsidised fertilisers.

Despite official claims of sufficient stock, fertilisers meant to be sold at Rs 242 per 45 kg bag are reportedly being diverted and sold illegally at prices ranging from Rs 800 to Rs 1,000.

Agencies like MARKFED were accused of mismanagement and corruption, with BJD leaders calling for strict enforcement and accountability. The crisis, they warned, could jeopardise food security and undo years of agricultural progress.

Former Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s recent letter to the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers was cited as a call for central intervention.

The Governor assured the delegation that he would review the situation and take appropriate steps.

As the Kharif season peaks, the BJD emphasised that swift action is essential to protect farmers’ livelihoods and ensure the success of Odisha’s agricultural output.
