Odisha Farmers’ Distress Raised in Parliament: BJD Seeks Urgent Intervention

BJD Rajya Sabha MP Dr Sasmit Patra has drawn national attention to the deepening crisis faced by farmers in Odisha.

Speaking during Zero Hour in Parliament, Dr Patra highlighted how agriculture is increasingly becoming a high‑risk, low‑return occupation due to rising input costs, climate‑induced crop losses, and systemic failures in procurement and insurance.

He pointed out that paddy procurement in Odisha has collapsed, with mandis failing to function and farmers forced into distress sales below the Minimum Support Price (MSP). Arbitrary deductions, such as Katni‑Chatni at the procurement centre,s have further exploited small and marginal farmers.

Fertiliser shortages during peak sowing season have added to cultivation costs, while crop insurance schemes have failed to protect farmers against losses.

Dr Patra stressed that nearly 4.5 crore people in Odisha are directly impacted by these challenges, warning that food security itself is at risk if farmers are not safeguarded.

He demanded immediate central intervention to ensure fair procurement, adequate fertiliser supply, and effective crop insurance coverage.

Speaking on behalf of BJD president Naveen Patnaik, Dr Patra reiterated the party’s commitment to fight for Odisha’s rightful dues and protect the interests of its farmers.
