Odisha Faces Severe Doctor Shortage, Government Pushes Recruitment Drive

Odisha is grappling with a critical healthcare crisis as nearly 60% of sanctioned doctor posts across the state remain vacant.

Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling informed the Assembly that out of 15,774 approved positions, 9,503 are unfilled, leaving only 6,271 doctors currently serving in government hospitals.

Among those employed, 1,135 are working on contractual terms while 5,003 hold permanent posts.

The shortage has placed immense strain on healthcare delivery, particularly in rural and tribal districts where access to medical services is already limited.

To address the crisis, the state government has written to the Odisha Public Service Commission (OPSC) to expedite the recruitment of 5,248 doctors.

Mahaling emphasised that recruitment drives and policy measures are underway to strengthen the healthcare system and ensure equitable access to medical care across the state.

This shortage highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms in medical staffing and infrastructure, as Odisha’s healthcare system struggles to meet the demands of its population.
