Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), June 11: Following the surge in prices of essential commodities such as rice, dal, edible oil, and wheat, the cost of vegetables has also soared in the Odisha market.
The sharp increase in vegetable prices, alongside essential goods, has impacted the financial plans of lower-middle-income households and economically disadvantaged families.
Recent reports indicate a notable hike in vegetable prices at Cuttack’s Chhatra Bazar market. Items that were previously priced at Rs 30 to Rs 40 per kg have now escalated to Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kg.
Brinjal now commands Rs 50 per kg, while bitter gourd has skyrocketed to Rs 80 per kg. Pointed gourd and onion prices have surged to Rs 50 and Rs 40 per kg, respectively. Additionally, ridge gourd is now priced at Rs 50 per kg. With the exception of potatoes, nearly all vegetable prices have experienced a steep incline.
Similarly, the Berhampur market reflects a similar trend, with prices surpassing Rs 50 for most vegetables. Okra is now priced at Rs 50 per kg, while spine gourd is available at Rs 70 per kg.
A vendor at Chhatra Bazar market attributed the price surge to diminished supply, stemming from adverse weather conditions such as heat, humidity, and prolonged drought. Reduced production in Odisha and decreased supplies from neighboring states like West Bengal, Bihar, and Karnataka have collectively contributed to the price hike.
The vendor expressed hope that prices would stabilize with increased local production following anticipated rainfall.
