Odisha Faces Freezing Nights and Dense Fog as Bay of Bengal Circulation Looms
Bhubaneswar, Dec 26: Odisha is reeling under biting cold and dense fog as meteorologists track a cyclonic circulation likely to form over the Bay of Bengal by December 31.
While experts confirm the system will remain confined to the southern Bay, its impact on Odisha is expected to be minimal.
Over the past 24 hours, night temperatures dipped below 10°C in 12 cities, with Koraput recording the state’s lowest at 4.8°C. Semiliguda (6.3°C), Daringbadi (6.5°C), Jharsuguda (7.2°C), and Phulbani (7.5°C) also reported severe cold.
Dense fog blanketed Nayagarh, Phulbani, Koraput, and Bhawanipatna, prompting the regional meteorological centre to issue a yellow warning for the next four days.
Director Manorama Mohanty of the Regional Meteorological Centre stated that no major weather changes are expected this week.
Night temperatures in plains and hilly areas may fall by another 1–2°C, while coastal regions will continue to face persistent cold and fog until the New Year.
Authorities have urged residents not to panic, noting that the system is unlikely to intensify into a depression or significantly affect Odisha.
The circulation may instead drift towards Indonesia or Sri Lanka.
