Odisha Faces Civil Service Officer Shortage: 182 IAS, IPS, IFS Posts Vacant

Bhubaneswar, Sept 22 — Odisha is facing a significant administrative challenge as 182 key civil service positions remain vacant across the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS), and Indian Forest Service (IFS). Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi disclosed the figures during a session in the Assembly, responding to a query from BJD MLA Arun Sahoo.

Out of 584 sanctioned posts, only 402 are currently filled. The IAS cadre has 45 vacancies out of 248, the IPS is short by 66 officers out of 195, and the IFS faces the steepest deficit with 71 unfilled posts out of 141.

The CM assured the House that the state government has formally requested the Centre to expedite recruitment and deployment to bridge the gap. The shortage is reportedly affecting policy execution, law enforcement, and forest management across the state.

The revelation has sparked concern among lawmakers and citizens, prompting calls for urgent reforms in cadre allocation and recruitment processes to ensure efficient governance and public service delivery.
