Odisha Faces Alarming Rise in Cybercrime: Rs 222 Crore Lost in 16 Months

Odisha has witnessed a dramatic surge in cybercrime over the past 16 months, with 3,486 cases registered and victims losing a staggering Rs 222 crore to online fraud.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed the figures in the Assembly while responding to a query from MLA Rama Chandra Kadam.

Police have intensified their crackdown, arresting 727 suspects, including 69 through digital tracking. Out of these, 104 cases have already been charge‑sheeted, and trials are underway.

Authorities have managed to refund Rs 61.36 lakh to victims and freeze bank accounts worth Rs 6.74 crore to prevent further misuse.

Majhi emphasised that the government is tightening its grip on cyber fraud networks and strengthening digital security measures to safeguard citizens.

This sharp rise in cybercrime highlights the urgent need for stronger awareness campaigns, improved digital literacy, and robust security infrastructure to protect individuals from online threats.
