Odisha Durga Puja Weather Alert: IMD Warns of Heavy Rainfall

As Odisha gears up for the grand Durga Puja celebrations, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cautionary forecast that could dampen the festive spirit.

A fresh low-pressure system is expected to form over the Bay of Bengal between September 30 and October 1, triggering widespread rainfall across the state.

According to IMD officials, the cyclonic circulation will first develop over the north Andaman Sea before intensifying into a low-pressure area over the north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal.

Rainfall is likely to begin around Ashtami and peak during Navami and Dashami (October 1–2), with moderate to heavy showers predicted in both southern and northern districts.

Districts including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Ganjam have been placed under heavy rainfall warnings. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30–40 km/h) are expected across nearly all districts, including Puri, Khordha, Cuttack, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj.

The IMD has also advised fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea on October 1 and 2 due to rough conditions.

Meanwhile, rising water levels in the Mahanadi river have sparked flood concerns, especially near the Maa Bhattarika Temple in Cuttack’s Badamba area, where floodwaters have reached the temple foothills.

Authorities are on high alert and may relocate the deity’s idol if water enters the sanctum sanctorum.

With the festive fervour at risk, local administrations are preparing emergency measures to ensure public safety and minimise disruption to the celebrations.
