Bhubaneswar, July 11: In a landmark achievement, drivers trained at the Institute of Driving Training and Research (IDTR) through Odisha’s SuVahak project now have access to employment opportunities in Japan. This follows a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Commerce and Transport Department and Bengaluru-based Navis HR, with support from a Japanese placement company.
Under SuVahak, which aims to enhance Heavy Motor Vehicle (HMV) driver skills to improve road safety, IDTRs provide comprehensive training programs including advanced licenses and refresher courses free of cost. This initiative has benefited thousands, including marginalized groups.
On July 10, 2024, Navis HR selected 30 candidates out of 180 for initial employment in Japan, marking a significant milestone. These drivers were honored by Bibhuti Bhushan Jena, Minister of Commerce & Transport, at Kharvel Bhawan in the presence of Principal Secretary Usha Padhee and Transport Commissioner Amitabh Thakur.
Since its inception, SuVahak has trained 4,488 new drivers and provided refresher courses to 21,964 others. Notably, 99 women and six transgender individuals have also received training, with 1,254 drivers securing employment opportunities. Drivers trained under SuVahak maintain an accident-free record.
Minister Jena expressed satisfaction at providing employment in Japan, emphasizing the Transport Department’s commitment to road safety through initiatives like SuVahak. The state government is funding Japanese language and etiquette training at a cost of INR 2.3 lakh per driver for the selected candidates.
Kailas Patil, Director of Palladium India, highlighted the project’s success in enhancing road safety and creating international job opportunities for Odisha’s skilled drivers.
