Odisha Deputy CM Launches Certified Seed Potato Distribution in Athagarh

The Odisha Government has rolled out a major initiative to strengthen potato cultivation under the State Sector Scheme “Development of Potato, Vegetable & Spices.” On Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo inaugurated the programme at Jagamohanpur, Keutapada, and Dhurushia in the Athagarh block of Cuttack district, personally handing over certified seed potatoes to farmers.

The scheme aims to ensure the timely availability of high-quality seeds, boost productivity, and reduce dependence on imports.

Addressing the gathering, Singh Deo highlighted the government’s commitment to farmer welfare and agricultural resilience.

He emphasised that empowering farmers with improved planting material and modern practices is key to strengthening the supply chain.

Athagarh MLA Ranendra Pratap Swain encouraged farmers to adopt high-yielding varieties, while OSSC Managing Director Niti Ranjan Sen detailed the corporation’s efforts to dispatch 1,40,000 quintals of certified seed potatoes statewide, of which 91,633 quintals have already been distributed.

In Cuttack district alone, 800 hectares will be covered under potato cultivation during the Rabi season, including 270 hectares in Athagarh subdivision.

The event also featured demonstrations of planting techniques and participation from senior officials, including Collector Dattatraya Bhausaheb Shinde and horticulture experts.

The programme underscores Odisha’s push toward crop diversification, sustainable farming, and farmer empowerment.
