Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), Oct 26: In a significant operation, Commercial Tax and Goods and Services Tax (CT-GST) officials seized approximately 20 kg of gold from a logistics van in Baripada, located in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district. The enforcement squad intercepted the vehicle at MKC Chhak on Friday and conducted a search, leading to the discovery of the gold.
While the precise value of the seized gold is still being assessed, it is estimated to be worth over ₹20 crore. The vehicle was reportedly transporting gold ornaments from Mumbai via Kolkata to various jewellers in Mayurbhanj and Balasore districts. However, the driver was unable to provide supporting documents or a valid explanation for the consignment.
Suspicious of potential wrongdoing, the CT-GST squad seized both the gold and the vehicle for further investigation. The logistics van was observed delivering gold ornaments to a jewellery store when the CT-GST team, conducting mobile surveillance, halted the vehicle and requested documentation. The documents presented appeared questionable, prompting officials to seize around 20 kg of gold, with further verification ongoing.
