Odisha Congress protests outside DGP office over rising crimes against women

Bhubaneswar, Aug 8 (UNI) Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Bhakta Charan Das today accused the BJP government in the state of attempting to cover up incidents of atrocities against women.

Addressing a protest organised by the party in front of the Director General of Police’s office in Cuttack, Das alleged that instead of ensuring justice for the victims, the BJP government was
trying to suppress such cases.

“If there is even a little sensitivity towards women and students, the government should take concrete action and set an example,” Das said.

He declared that the Congress would continue its struggle until women in the state receive security, respect, and justice.

The Congress chief claimed that Odisha was becoming increasingly unsafe for women and girl students, who now find it difficult to move freely. “Every day, there are reports of harassment,” he added.

Das said the party had earlier demonstrated its strength at the Bhubaneswar “Samvidhan Bachao Rally” led by Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge.

He recalled that the Congress had also observed an Odisha Bandh, staged a sit-in at the Assembly, and gheraoed the Chief Minister’s residence over the tragic self-immolation of an FM College girl.

Senior leaders participating in the protest, strongly condemned the rising cases of violence against women, attributing them to the state police’s inaction, and urged law enforcement to discharge their duties responsibly.

Later, an 11-member delegation from the party’s state women’s wing submitted a memorandum to the Additional DGP, in the absence of the DGP, and held detailed discussions on the issue of women’s harassment.
