Odisha CM Requests West Bengal to Reconsider ‘Jagannath Dham’ for Digha Temple

Odisha CM Mohan Majhi Operation Sindoor

Bhubaneswar, May 6, 2025 (OT Webdesk) – Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has urged the West Bengal government to reconsider the naming of its newly constructed Jagannath Temple in Digha as “Jagannath Dham.”

The request emphasizes the historical and religious significance of Puri’s Jagannath Dham, a sacred pilgrimage site central to Odisha’s identity.

Majhi stated that the name “Jagannath Dham” is intrinsically tied to Puri, which has been a revered spiritual hub for centuries.

He urged West Bengal to choose an alternative name that respects Puri’s legacy while ensuring cultural harmony between the two states.

The Jagannath Temple in Digha, set to be a major attraction, is part of West Bengal’s efforts to boost religious tourism.

However, Odisha’s leadership and cultural bodies fear that sharing the same title could dilute Puri’s exclusivity as the primary Jagannath Dham.

Odisha’s appeal has sparked discussions among religious and political groups, with devotees expressing mixed reactions over the matter.

While some view West Bengal’s temple as a gesture of devotion to Lord Jagannath, others believe renaming the Digha temple would help avoid confusion and preserve Puri’s stature.

The West Bengal government is yet to respond to Odisha’s request.
