Bhubaneswar, Feb 27: Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Majhi met Jogendra Samartha, a sevayat of Shree Lingaraj Temple, who sustained serious injuries after falling from a height of 20 feet while carrying the sacred Mahadeepa to the temple peak during Maha Shivratri rituals on Wednesday. He is currently undergoing treatment at Capital Hospital, Bhubaneswar.
The incident occurred around 10:30 pm, causing panic among devotees gathered for the auspicious event. Another servitor later completed the ritual by placing the Mahadeepa atop the temple around 10:45 pm. Samartha, belonging to the Samartha Nijog, suffered severe facial injuries and a fractured leg. Additionally, two other priests and a police official sustained minor burns due to hot oil spillage during the mishap and were also taken to the hospital.
Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan, who accompanied the CM, assured that the injured sevayat was receiving the best medical care and was in stable condition. The other injured individuals were also recovering well.
Lifting the Mahadeepa after the Bedha Parikrama ritual marks the conclusion of the day-long Maha Shivratri fast. Khordha Collector Chanchal Rana stated that an investigation would be conducted into the circumstances of the fall.
