
Odisha CM Backs PM Modi’s GST Reforms, Calls It a Leap Toward ‘Developed India 2047
In a strong endorsement of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a “Developed India by 2047,” Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi welcomed the sweeping GST reforms announced by the Central Government.
Speaking at Odisha Niwas, Majhi praised the decisions taken during the latest GST Council meeting, calling them “transformational” for India’s economic trajectory.
Among the key reforms:
- GST on kendu leaves slashed from 18% to 5%, benefiting tribal collectors.
- Health and life insurance services are exempted from GST, easing access for middle- and lower-income families.
- Reduced GST on agricultural machinery, fertilisers, and raw materials to support farmers.
- Compensation Cess removed from most goods (excluding tobacco, pan masala, and bidi) starting September 22, 2025.
- Lower GST on essential items like life-saving medicines, packaged foods, clothing, footwear, bicycles, and household goods.
- Simplified startup registration with auto-approval within three days for small businesses.
- GST on small cars, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers reduced from 28% to 18%.
Majhi emphasised that these reforms will foster transparency, reduce compliance burdens, and stimulate entrepreneurship.
He extended gratitude to Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and the GST Council, stating that Odisha stands firmly behind the national vision.
