Odisha Charts New Path in Urban Sanitation with Pyrolysis Innovation

Bhubaneswar: The Housing and Urban Development Department of Odisha, in collaboration with TSU-FSSM (EY) and Dasra, hosted a landmark workshop on urban sanitation, reaffirming the state’s leadership in Faecal Sludge and Septage Management (FSSM).

A key highlight was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO), Administrative Staff College of India (ASCI), and TIDE Technocrats Ltd.

The agreement paves the way for establishing a cutting-edge pyrolysis unit at the Basuaghai Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP).

This facility will enable advanced biosolids treatment, resource recovery, and circular economy practices, setting a new benchmark in sustainable sanitation.

Senior officials emphasised Odisha’s pioneering role in sanitation reforms. Additional Chief Secretary Usha Padhee hailed the state’s FSSM program as a “bright star” in urban development, recognised nationally and internationally.

She also acknowledged the decade-long support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in strengthening sanitation initiatives.

Binaya Kumar Dash, Additional Secretary (H&UD) and Mission Director of Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban, described the workshop as a milestone for scalability, sustainability, and future-readiness of the FSSM ecosystem.

The workshop also featured structured stakeholder consultations, generating actionable recommendations for long-term operational and financial sustainability.

The initiative aligns with the state’s broader vision of Vikshit Odisha(Developed Odisha), reinforcing its commitment to inclusive and resilient urban growth.
