Odisha cadre IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey appointed as SEBI Chairman

Bhubaneswar, Feb 28: Senior IAS officer Tuhin Kanta Pandey has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The appointment was approved by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet on Thursday. Pandey, a 1987-batch Odisha cadre officer, is currently serving as Union Finance Secretary and will take charge for an initial tenure of three years. He succeeds Madhabi Puri Buch, whose term as SEBI Chairperson ends on March 1, 2025.
The government issued an official order confirming his appointment, stating, “The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR:1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue, to the post of Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), initially for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier.”
The selection process for SEBI’s top post began in January, with February 17 set as the deadline for applications. Pandey brings a wealth of experience in economic policy and financial administration.
An alumnus of Punjab University, Chandigarh, with a Master’s in Economics, Pandey also holds an MBA from the UK. Throughout his career, he has held key positions in both the Odisha government and the Union government. In Odisha, he served as Executive Director of Odisha State Finance Corporation (OSFC), Managing Director of Odisha Small Industries Corporation (OSIC), Collector of Sambalpur district, Special Secretary in the General Administration Department, Transport Commissioner, Health Secretary, and Commissioner of Commercial Taxes.
