Odisha cabinet approves new rules to curb illegal mining
Bhubaneswar, Nov 21 (UNI) In a major move to curb theft, smuggling, and illegal mining in the state, the Odisha Cabinet on Friday approved the enactment of the Odisha Minerals (Prevention of Illegal Mining and Regulation of Trading, Transportation & Storage) Rules, 2025.
These new rules will replace the existing framework under the Odisha Minerals (Prevention of Theft, Smuggling and Illegal Mining and Regulation of Possession, Storage, Trading and Transportation) Rules, 2007.
Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, while briefing the press, said the updated rules aim to create a smoother and more transparent environment for mining lessees, supporting the state government’s broader vision of “Viksit Odisha.”
The new regulations seek to improve the ease of doing business while strengthening oversight of mineral resources.
The 2025 Rules promise a more efficient and effective mineral administration system compared to the 2007 rules.
They introduce a stronger legal framework designed to prevent illegal mining and ensure proper regulation of mineral trading, storage, and transportation across Odisha.
The provisions are aligned with the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, 1957, as amended.
