Odisha Bus Owners Threaten Statewide Strike from December 1 Over Police Inspection Powers
Private bus operators across Odisha have warned of a statewide strike beginning December 1, 2025, if the state government authorises police to conduct motor vehicle inspections.
The Private Bus Owners’ Association, led by secretary Debendra Sahu, announced that services will be suspended across the state should the proposal move forward.
Sahu argued that police intervention could lead to unnecessary obstruction and penalties, recalling that similar powers were withdrawn nearly four decades ago when police admitted they could not manage the responsibility.
Currently, vehicle checks are conducted without police involvement, except for enforcement against two-wheeler riders under Section 184, which bus operators supported.
However, Sahu noted that police intervention has gradually expanded in recent years, raising concerns among transport operators.
The association has already submitted a memorandum urging the government not to revive the authority. Despite objections, reports suggest the state government intends to proceed.
A general body meeting is scheduled for November 25, 2025, to decide the next course of action.
If the government formally grants these powers, bus services across Odisha will remain off the roads from December 1, severely disrupting daily commuters who rely on buses for travel.
The looming confrontation underscores growing tension between transport operators and authorities over regulatory control.
