Bhubaneswar, (Orissa Today), May 28: Although Cyclone ‘Remal’ spared Odisha, it intensified the flow of dry westerly-northwesterly winds toward the state, resulting in a surge in daytime temperatures.
By 11:30 am, temperatures had climbed to 40°C and above at three locations in the state, with Jharsuguda recording the highest at 40.6°C, followed by Hirakud (40.2°C) and Sambalpur (40°C). Bhubaneswar registered 37.7°C with a humidity level of 66%. By 8:30 am, the temperature in the city had reached 32.6°C, accompanied by 83% humidity. Coastal areas such as Paradip (81%), Puri (80%), Gopalpur (79%), Chandbali (75%), and Balasore (74%) also experienced high humidity levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow warning for hot and humid weather conditions in one or two places in Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati districts from May 28 to May 30.
Additionally, heatwave conditions may prevail in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Balangir, Sambalpur, and Nuapada districts on May 29 and May 30.
On May 31, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph may occur in one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, Jharsuguda, Nabarangpur, and Kalahandi districts. A yellow warning for thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface wind speeds reaching 40-50 kmph is also likely in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Dhenkanal, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, and Kandhamal on June 1.
The weather agency further predicted a 2-4 degree Celsius rise in daytime temperatures at many places in the state over the next three days.
