Odisha Braces for School Closures Amid Diarrhoea Outbreak

Diarrhoea outbreak Odisha schools

Bhubaneswar, June 19(OT Webdesk): The Odisha government is intensifying emergency health measures following a surge in diarrhoea cases across several districts.

With 64 confirmed infections and one fatality in Cuttack alone, district collectors have been empowered to temporarily close schools based on local severity.

The School and Mass Education Department, in coordination with the Health Department, is monitoring the situation across the state.

Cuttack has already declared the closure of all schools and colleges until June 20. Further closures are expected if conditions worsen.

“Schools will remain closed in areas where the diarrhoea situation worsens,” said Minister Nityananda Gond, emphasising the government’s proactive stance.

Measures such as supplying safe drinking water, promoting hygienic food handling, and disinfecting campuses are underway to safeguard student health.

Officials are urging parents and educators to remain vigilant and follow health advisories.

The situation remains fluid, with district-level decisions being taken as needed to contain the outbreak.
