Odisha Braces for Intense Rainfall as Low-Pressure System Strengthens Over Bay of Bengal

Odisha heavy rainfall

Bhubaneswar, May 27 (OT Webdesk): The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported the formation of a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, which is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall across Odisha. With the system likely to intensify in the next 48 hours, the state may experience significant weather disturbances, including thunderstorms, gusty winds, and sudden downpours.

According to IMD forecasts, the rainfall will persist until May 30, providing relief from the scorching summer heat and potentially accelerating the arrival of the southwest monsoon. A yellow warning has been issued for 15 districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Khurda, anticipating thunderstorms with wind speeds of 30–40 km/h.

Despite concerns about severe weather, the IMD has assured that there is no cyclone threat to Odisha, stating that the low-pressure system will primarily enhance monsoon progression rather than intensify into a tropical storm.

Residents are advised to stay alert for heavy showers and possible disruptions. Authorities have urged precautionary measures, ensuring preparedness for potential flooding in low-lying areas.
