Bhubaneswar, July 18 (UNI) Odisha has become the first state in India to implement a comprehensive energy transition policy, reaffirming its leadership in the national push
towards clean and sustainable energy, Deputy Chief Minister K. V. Singh Deo said today.
Speaking at a workshop on the Odisha Energy Transition Policy, Singh Deo, who also holds
the Energy portfolio, said, “Odisha is not just participating in the energy transition—we are
leading it. With a consistent 7percent GDP growth and a disproportionately higher share in
national emissions, we are committed to act decisively.”
He described the draft policy as a strategic roadmap focused on accountability, innovation, and measurable progress.
“We are determined to implement this policy with urgency and precision, setting a benchmark for other states,” he added.
The workshop served as a collaborative platform, bringing together representatives from key government departments, industry, and international financial institutions.
Stakeholders from sectors such as Industry, Health, Fisheries, Urban Development, and Agriculture came together to deliberate on the policy’s strategic direction.
It marked a significant milestone in Odisha’s journey toward a low-carbon, sustainable future and fostered crucial cross-sectoral dialogue for an inclusive and actionable energy transition roadmap.
Principal Secretary of the Energy Department, Vishal Kumar Dev, stressed the importance of collaboration and measurable outcomes. He said the draft policy integrates renewable energy,
energy efficiency, and green employment, laying the foundation for a forward-looking energy framework.
Dr. Satya Priya Rath, Managing Director of GRIDCO, emphasized GRIDCO’s pivotal role, stating that it is committed to enabling sectoral emission reductions and aligning Odisha’s progress with national climate goals.
Sujata Gupta, Regional Director of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), expressed interest in supporting Odisha’s initiatives, noting that ADB has assisted energy transition programs across several countries.
Sreyamsa Bairiganjan, Chief of Programs at Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, lauded
Odisha’s proactive approach. Meanwhile, Padam Prakash, Partner at PwC, highlighted the significance of data-driven planning.
PwC presented a detailed roadmap demonstrating how various departments—beyond just Energy—can collectively contribute to Odisha’s clean energy future.
Departments like Industry, Health, Urban Development, Fisheries, and Agriculture were showcased as critical players in aligning their strategies to the state’s energy goals.
The session concluded with an engaging interaction among stakeholders, reinforcing a shared commitment to a greener, more sustainable Odisha.
