Odisha Battles Heatwave as Cyclonic Rainfall Looms Over Coastal Regions

Odisha Weather Alert

Bhubaneswar, June 8, ( OT Webdesk ): Odisha is facing a severe weather crisis as interior districts endure intense heatwave conditions while coastal areas brace for heavy rainfall due to an emerging cyclonic circulation in the Bay of Bengal.

On Sunday, Jharsuguda recorded a scorching 40°C, with districts like Bargarh, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Boudh, and Nuapada expected to experience similar conditions until June 12.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow warning, urging residents to take precautions against heat exhaustion.

Simultaneously, a cyclonic circulation is intensifying over the Bay of Bengal, expected to develop into a low-pressure system that will bring widespread rainfall.

Thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph are anticipated across multiple districts, including Malkangiri, Koraput, Mayurbhanj, and Keonjhar on Monday.

From Tuesday onwards, rain and thunderstorms will extend to 19 districts, escalating to 24 districts by Wednesday.

Coastal districts like Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, and Bhadrak may see moderate to heavy rainfall, offering relief from the heat but raising concerns of waterlogging and flooding.

The IMD has urged residents in affected areas to remain cautious and stay updated on weather advisories.

Meteorological expert Sanjeev Dwivedi stated that rainfall beyond June 12 could help farmers, with cloudy skies expected to lower temperatures and humidity levels.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, advising residents to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and stay hydrated amidst the ongoing heatwave.
