Odisha Bans Midday Outdoor Work as Heat Wave Preparedness Intensifies

The Odisha government has announced a series of urgent measures to safeguard citizens from the looming heat wave.

Outdoor physical labour and construction activities are now prohibited between 11 AM and 3 PM, with strict penalties for violators.

To protect vulnerable groups, cooling shelters will be set up across heat‑affected districts, while schools will implement “Water Bell” systems to ensure children stay hydrated.

Hospitals have been directed to establish dedicated heat stroke wards, and public places will host drinking water kiosks, ORS distribution points, and first‑aid facilities.

District collectors have been empowered with full administrative authority to act swiftly, while the Power Department has been tasked with ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply.

Awareness campaigns through media and posters will educate citizens on heat safety.

Special attention is being given to industrial and mining zones such as Jharsuguda, Brajarajnagar, Angul, and Talcher.

Long‑term strategies include promoting urban forestry and green building initiatives to reduce heat impact.

Minister Suresh Pujari emphasised that human safety remains the government’s top priority, with senior officials and district administrators coordinating efforts to ensure readiness against both heat waves and pre‑monsoon storms.
