Odisha Assembly Winter Session Opens with Tributes
The Odisha Assembly commenced its winter session on Thursday with a solemn condolence motion for departed members.
Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi moved the proposal, which was unanimously supported by opposition leaders.
A one‑minute silent prayer was observed before Speaker Surma Padhi adjourned the House until 4:30 PM.
Later in the day, President Droupadi Murmu is scheduled to address the Assembly, marking a historic moment in the state’s legislative calendar.
Her speech is expected to set the tone for upcoming debates and underscore the importance of governance and collaboration.
The winter session will run until December 31, covering 29 working days. Lawmakers will deliberate on key legislative and financial matters, including the presentation of the first supplementary budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year by the Finance Minister on Friday.
Expenditure demands will follow, with the Appropriation Bill slated for passage on December 8.
Ahead of the session, Speaker Surama Padhy convened an all‑party meeting to ensure smooth conduct. Leaders from BJP, BJD, and Congress pledged cooperation, highlighting the Assembly’s focus on constructive debate and financial planning.
This session blends tributes, fiscal responsibility, and presidential guidance, reflecting Odisha’s legislative priorities and the spirit of collaboration across party lines.
