Odisha Assembly Uproar Over Shergad Block Chairman Attack
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Assembly on Tuesday witnessed heated scenes during Zero Hour after opposition members raised concerns over the recent attack on the Shergad Block Chairman.
Opposition legislators alleged that elected representatives are increasingly unsafe, claiming that nearly 20 ruling party supporters stormed the chairman’s office and assaulted him.
They described the incident as evidence of “gundaraj” in the state.
Congress members joined in condemning the attack, demanding immediate intervention and accountability.
BJP legislators countered by accusing both BJD and Congress of lacking moral authority to speak on law and order, citing past incidents under their regimes.
The uproar forced Speaker Surama Padhy to adjourn the House for ten minutes. Later, BJD chief whip Pramila Mallik acknowledged the rise in assaults on public representatives and called for strict punitive measures.
Ruling party members, however, accused the opposition of shedding “crocodile tears,” insisting that under the current government, criminals are not shielded and justice is being delivered.
