Odisha Assembly Monsoon Session Kicks Off Amid Political Firestorm

Bhubaneswar, September 18, 2025 — The Odisha Assembly’s Monsoon Session commenced today with high political drama expected to unfold over the next week.

The Congress party has announced its intent to move a no-confidence motion against the BJP-led state government, citing failures in law and order, women’s safety, and farmer welfare.

Congress Legislature Party leader Rama Chandra Kadam declared that the people of Odisha have “lost trust” in the current administration.

Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Bhakta Charan Das further accused the government of ignoring atrocities against women, Dalits, and tribals, and failing to provide adequate fertiliser to farmers.

He referenced recent incidents, including the murder of a female constable and a gang rape in Puri district, as evidence of a breakdown in governance.

Meanwhile, the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, launched its own offensive, branding the BJP’s performance as a “double engine failure.” Patnaik criticised the government’s handling of the Rath Yatra, the collapse of the Panchayati Raj system, and its inability to ensure public safety.

Security has been tightened around the Assembly, with Odisha Police deploying 30 platoons—approximately 900 personnel—and DGP Y B Khurania personally overseeing arrangements.

As the session continues until September 25, political observers anticipate heated debates and potential shifts in Odisha’s legislative landscape.
