Odisha Assembly Chaos: House Adjourned After George Tirkey Tribute Sparks BJD Protest
Bhubaneswar, September 20 — The Odisha Legislative Assembly descended into turmoil today after Chief Minister Mohan Majhi introduced a condolence motion to honour the late George Tirkey, a respected former MLA.
What began as a solemn tribute quickly spiralled into disorder as members of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) raised slogans and protested over unresolved issues surrounding fertiliser distribution.
The disruption intensified when BJD legislators stormed the Speaker’s podium and shouted slogans beneath Speaker Surama Padhy’s chair, prompting an immediate adjournment of the House until 4 PM.
The incident underscores rising tensions between the ruling and opposition parties, with the fertiliser issue emerging as a flashpoint in the ongoing legislative session.
The Assembly is expected to reconvene later today, though further disruptions remain a possibility.
