Odisha Assembly Budget Session Stalled Amid Farmers’ Uproar
The Odisha Legislative Assembly’s budget session, which began on February 17, has entered an interim recess until March 9 after repeated disruptions by opposition parties over farmers’ issues.
Governor Raghubar Das delivered his customary address, followed by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi’s presentation of the state budget for 2026–27.
However, proceedings were marred by continuous protests from the BJD and Congress, who raised concerns about paddy procurement failures, deductions (katni‑chatni), and mandi mismanagement.
The uproar led to multiple adjournments, effectively washing out the first phase of the session.
During the recess, standing committees will examine departmental expenditure demands, which will be tabled once the House reconvenes on March 10.
The confrontation underscores deepening political divides, with farmers’ welfare emerging as the central flashpoint between the ruling and opposition benches.
