Bhubaneswar, Jan 13: The Odisha government has approved a monthly pension and free healthcare benefits for individuals detained during the Emergency (June 26, 1975, to March 21, 1977) under laws like the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), the Defence of India Rules (DIR), or the Defence and Internal Security of India Rules (DISIR).
According to a notification issued by the Home Department, a monthly pension of ₹20,000 will be sanctioned to those who were alive as of January 1, 2025, irrespective of the duration of their detention. The benefits will take effect from January 1, 2025, with no retroactive payments.
Additionally, beneficiaries will receive free medical treatment as per the provisions of the Health & Family Welfare Department. The initiative underscores the state’s recognition of the hardships faced during one of India’s darkest periods of democracy.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi emphasized the significance of honoring these patriots, stating, “Our government will provide pension, free healthcare, and free bus passes to those who fought against the undemocratic Emergency.”
The state has also doubled the pensions of freedom fighters, reinforcing its commitment to recognizing the contributions of those who fought for justice and democracy.
