Odisha Allows Women to Work Night Shifts with Consent and Safety Measures
(OT Webdesk)In a landmark move to promote gender inclusivity in the workforce, the Odisha government has amended its labour laws to allow women to work night shifts in private establishments—provided they give written consent.
This policy shift follows the repeal of Section 23 of the Odisha Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1956, which previously barred women from night duty.
The Labour Department’s notification outlines strict safety protocols for employers.
Workplaces must ensure a minimum of three women per night shift, appoint a female supervisor, and provide GPS-enabled transport with verified drivers.
If transport isn’t feasible, nearby accommodation must be arranged.
Additional mandates include CCTV surveillance, proper lighting, sanitation, drinking water, and the display of helpline numbers (181 and 1800-345-6703) both on-site and on transport vehicles.
Employment of minors during night shifts remains prohibited.
The move is seen as a progressive step toward empowering women while balancing business flexibility with employee welfare.
