Odisha Adds 558 Sq Km Forest Cover, Celebrates World Forest Day

Bhubaneswar: Odisha celebrated World Forest Day 2026 with a state‑level program at Lok Seva Bhavan Convention Centre, highlighting the state’s achievements in forest conservation and its commitment to balancing development with sustainability.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi underscored the dual importance of forests for ecological balance and livelihood security.

He announced that Odisha has added 558 sq km of forest and tree cover in the past two years, bringing the total to 58,597 sq km—37.63% of the state’s geographical area.

The CM praised large‑scale plantation drives, including the record planting of 1.49 crore saplings in a single day under the “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign.

He also called for stronger measures against forest fires and human‑wildlife conflicts.

Forest officers, guards, and rangers were honoured for their outstanding service.

Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia emphasised tribal development and livelihood opportunities in forest regions, while Chief Secretary Anu Garg highlighted the role of forests in boosting tourism and building a “Green Economy.”

The event concluded with exhibitions, book releases, and recognition of best‑performing forest divisions, reinforcing Odisha’s leadership in sustainable forestry.
