Bhubaneswar, May 19 (OT Webdesk) – In an ambitious move to promote and modernize the Odia film industry, the Odisha government’s Department of Culture convened a pivotal meeting at the Sanskruti Bhavan. This gathering focused on the comprehensive development of Odia cinema, expanding its reach, and ensuring its sustainability in the digital era.

Presided over by eminent actor and legislator Siddhanta Mahapatra, the meeting saw participation from leading filmmakers, directors, actors, musicians, and writers. Discussions revolved around initiatives aimed at enriching the industry, providing financial support, and celebrating Odia cinematic excellence.

Key Developments from the Meeting:

  1. Regular Odisha State Film Awards – Plans to institutionalize annual awards were discussed to recognize and promote talent within the industry.
  2. Expansion of Award Categories – The current 33 categories are set to expand further, ensuring broader inclusion of industry professionals.
  3. A Dedicated Website for Film Awards – To enhance transparency and accessibility, a new website will be launched, listing nominees, winners, and related film details.
  4. Development of a New Film Policy – The proposed policy aims to provide incentives for film production, ease operational procedures, and facilitate financial assistance.
  5. Strengthening Odisha Film Development Corporation (OFDC) – Efforts will be made to empower the OFDC and streamline its workflow.
  6. Revamping Kalinga Studio – To support local filmmakers, upgrades to existing studio infrastructure are planned.
  7. Boosting OTT & Digital Content – The government recognises the growing influence of streaming platforms and intends to create frameworks to support digital content creators.

Stakeholders also urged the state to focus on affordability in cinema halls and promote Odia literature-based films. By reinforcing the industry’s foundations, the government aims to bolster local storytelling and ensure its global visibility.
