Nor’wester Storms Pose Threat to Odisha Till Mid-May

Bhubaneswar: Weather experts have warned that Odisha will continue to face the fury of Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester) storms until mid-May.

These seasonal thunderstorms, often accompanied by heavy rain, lightning, strong winds, and even hail, are expected to peak during afternoons, particularly between 2 PM and evening hours.

The Odisha Meteorological Department has cautioned that the final week of March and the first two weeks of May will be critical, with frequent storm activity likely.

Farmers, labourers, and outdoor workers remain the most vulnerable, facing risks of falling trees, damaged houses, and potential loss of life and property.

Experts attribute the rising intensity of these storms to climate change, which is amplifying weather extremes across the region.

Authorities may issue red and orange alerts during severe conditions, urging residents to stay indoors, avoid metal objects and water bodies, and ensure rooftops and electrical connections are secure.

Regional weather centres are closely monitoring developments and will continue to provide updates as Odisha braces for weeks of turbulent weather.
