No Restrictions: Non-Veg Sales Restored in Koraput for January 26
Koraput: In a swift reversal, the Koraput district administration has withdrawn its controversial order banning the sale of non-vegetarian food items on Republic Day, January 26, 2026.
The earlier directive, issued to local officials, prohibited the sale of eggs, fish, chicken, mutton, and other non-vegetarian items across the district.
The move sparked widespread debate, with many questioning the rationale behind imposing dietary restrictions on a national holiday.
District Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan announced the withdrawal of the ban through a post on X (formerly Twitter), clarifying that the administration had taken the decision after receiving objections and feedback from various sections of society.
While some residents initially welcomed the ban, citing cultural sentiments, many others criticised it as unnecessary and inconsistent with the spirit of Republic Day, which celebrates India’s democratic values and inclusivity.
The withdrawal has been seen as a pragmatic step, reflecting the administration’s responsiveness to public opinion.
Republic Day celebrations in Koraput will now proceed without restrictions on food choices, allowing citizens to mark the occasion in their own way.
