Nayagarh Bus Accident: Five Dead, 30 Injured; CM Majhi Announces ₹4 Lakh Ex Gratia

Nayagarh: In a tragic incident, a tourist bus carrying nearly 60 pilgrims from Berhampur to Harishankar temple overturned on NH‑57 near Kutibari Ghat around 1 am on Saturday.

The bus reportedly lost control on a sharp curve, hit a roadside rock, and toppled, leaving five people dead and over 30 injured.

The deceased include three women and the driver, identified as Suprabha Sahu, Sumati Sahu, Praveen Kumar Sahu, L. Hari Patra, and L. Laxmi Patra.

At least ten of the injured are in critical condition and were rushed to Nayagarh District Headquarters Hospital after locals and police carried out rescue operations.

Police have launched an investigation into possible causes, including overloading, driver fatigue, poor road conditions, or mechanical failure.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh for each deceased’s family.

He assured all necessary support for the injured. Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik also conveyed condolences and wished a speedy recovery for the victims.

The accident has cast a pall of grief over Berhampur, where many of the victims belonged to the same community.
