Moquim’s Letter to Sonia Gandhi Sparks Rift in Odisha Congress
The Odisha Congress is facing fresh turbulence after former Barabati-Cuttack MLA Mohammed Moquim wrote a letter to Sonia Gandhi questioning the leadership of Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) president Bhakta Das.
Moquim’s December 10 letter criticised Das’s appointment, citing repeated electoral defeats and ideological differences.
He also raised concerns about Das’s past links to the Jayaprakash and Koshal movements, while broadening his criticism to include the party’s national leadership.
His remarks about Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s age drew sharp backlash from senior leaders.
Responding to the controversy, OPCC chief Bhakta Das strongly defended Kharge, highlighting his decades of political experience and contributions to the party.
Das remarked that those aligned with the BJP should join the BJP instead of questioning Congress leadership.
The OPCC has submitted a detailed report to the party high command, alleging that Moquim’s statements harmed organisational unity and created confusion among workers.
While no formal decision has been announced, disciplinary action against Moquim is being considered.
Senior leaders, including Suresh Routray, Ananta Sethi, and Jayadev Jen, publicly criticised Moquim for airing grievances in the media.
They stressed that internal issues should be addressed directly with the high command.
With the report now before the Congress leadership, the party may seek an explanation from Moquim before deciding on further steps.
