Modi govt steps down, preparations begin for new government formation

New Delhi, (Orissa Today), June 5: On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Droupadi Murmu and tendered his resignation, along with that of the Council of Ministers.

President Murmu accepted the resignation and urged the Prime Minister and the Council of Ministers to continue their duties until the new government assumes office. The Union Cabinet convened its final meeting at the Prime Minister’s residence on Wednesday morning, passing a proposal for the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha.

This development follows the Lok Sabha election results, which granted an absolute majority to the BJP-led NDA, securing nearly 295 seats and paving the way for the formation of the next government.
The BJP alone secured 240 seats, surpassing the combined strength of the INDIA bloc, while its allies Telugu Desam Party and JD-U clinched 16 and 12 seats, respectively. President Murmu also extended a dinner invitation to all outgoing ministers of the Modi government.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is slated to convene on Wednesday evening to strategize the forthcoming government formation under Narendra Modi’s leadership for a third consecutive term.
In the recently concluded Lok Sabha polls, the BJP emerged as the single largest party, while the NDA emerged as the largest coalition. The term of the 17th Lok Sabha concludes on June 16.
