Modi Defiant: No Compromise on Farmers, Industry Amid US Tariff Threat

(OT Webdesk)In a dramatic escalation of trade tensions, the United States has issued a draft notice to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods starting August 27, 2025.

The move, spearheaded by the Trump administration, aims to penalize India for continuing its purchase of Russian crude oil—part of Washington’s broader strategy to pressure Moscow amid stalled Ukraine peace negotiations.

Vice President JD Vance described India’s inclusion in the secondary sanctions framework as a calculated effort to weaken Russia’s oil economy. The announcement has sparked swift and resolute reactions from New Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking in Ahmedabad, declared that India would not compromise on the interests of farmers, small-scale industries, and domestic producers.

He urged citizens to embrace swadeshi (indigenous) goods, invoking the values of Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Krishna to underscore national resilience.

Meanwhile, President Trump expanded his trade threats to other nations enforcing digital taxes and tech regulations, warning of additional tariffs and export restrictions unless such measures are rolled back.

Despite mounting pressure, India remains committed to its energy partnerships with Russia and China, prioritising national economic interests over external influence.
