Mob Justice in Bhadrak: Father Ends Life Following Daughter’s Public Shame
Bhadrak, Odisha: A tragic incident unfolded in Charadia village after a kangaroo court humiliated a young woman and imposed a hefty fine on her family, allegedly for involvement in the illegal liquor trade.
According to reports, women’s groups stormed the house of Lambodar Tarai, accusing his family of selling liquor. His daughter, Lakshmipriya, was dragged to the village square, beaten, and forced to wear shoes around her neck in a public display of humiliation.
The self-styled court imposed a fine of Rs 1 lakh on the family. To secure his daughter’s release, Lambodar paid Rs 10,000 in advance. Later that night, unable to bear the trauma and harassment, he consumed poison and died at Chandbali hospital.
Police have registered a case against 10 individuals allegedly involved in the assault and humiliation. Investigations are underway.
The incident highlights the persistence of the illegal liquor trade in Charadia despite repeated protests, and the dangers of mob justice when frustration with enforcement leads villagers to take the law into their own hands.
