Brooklyn Bridge ship crash

New York, May 17, ( OT Webdesk)  – A devastating maritime accident unfolded Saturday night as the Mexican Navy’s tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and collided with the Brooklyn Bridge, killing two people and injuring at least 19 others.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30 PM local time, sent shockwaves across the city.

Eyewitnesses described a horrifying scene as the ship’s 147-foot-tall masts struck the bridge’s lower roadbed, with some sailors reportedly atop the masts at the time of impact.

One witness shared that a sailor dangled from a harness for nearly 15 minutes before being rescued, adding to the chaotic aftermath.

Officials confirmed that the vessel lost power just moments before the collision. “Earlier tonight, the Mexican Navy tall ship Cuauhtémoc lost power and crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge.

Of the 277 onboard, 19 sustained injuries—2 critically—and sadly, 2 have died,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams stated on X.

Despite the intensity of the crash, structural assessments of the 142-year-old Brooklyn Bridge indicate it remains intact, according to reports from local authorities.

However, the accident resulted in massive disruptions in the area, with the New York Police Department urging residents to avoid South Street Seaport in Manhattan and Dumbo in Brooklyn due to emergency response efforts.

Mexican officials confirmed that 22 crew members sustained injuries, with 19 receiving immediate medical treatment.

Social media footage of the crash shows the ship’s masts snapping upon impact, with the vessel continuing to drift under the bridge after the collision.

Investigators are now working to determine the cause of the power failure and whether any safety violations may have contributed to the disaster.

The Cuauhtémoc, a historic training vessel used for diplomatic missions, has been a symbol of international goodwill for decades. This collision marks one of the most severe incidents in its history.

Authorities are expected to release further details as the investigation unfolds.
