Malkangiri MV-26 Violence: Arrests Rise to 18 as Relief Efforts Continue
Malkangiri district in Odisha is slowly returning to normalcy after violent clashes in MV-26 village left over 200 houses and shops damaged earlier this month.
Police confirmed that 18 individuals have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the arson and unrest, which stemmed from tensions between Bengali-origin settlers of MV-26 and tribal residents of neighbouring Rakhalguda following the murder of Lake Padiami, a 51-year-old Koya tribal widow.
Authorities have lifted prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, though internet services remain suspended until Monday noon to prevent the spread of rumours.
District officials are holding frequent peace talks with community leaders to restore harmony.
BJP Nabarangpur MP Balabhadra Majhi visited both villages, condemning the “barbaric and inhuman” killing and assuring justice for the victim’s family.
also denounced the arson in MV-26, promising compensation for affected families.
High-level visits by senior officials, including the Deputy Chief Minister and Police DG, underline the seriousness with which the administration is addressing the crisis.
Relief distribution has been ongoing since the first day, with cooked food, blankets, clothing, utensils, and tarpaulins provided to displaced families.
Electricity and piped drinking water have been restored, though schools remain closed, disrupting education for local children.
Officials expressed optimism that peace is gradually returning, with rehabilitation efforts and community cooperation paving the way for reconciliation between tribal and settler communities.
