Mahanadi Water Dispute: Joint Committee to Meet on December 5, Tribunal Hearing Scheduled for December 20

Efforts to resolve the long‑standing Mahanadi water dispute between Odisha and Chhattisgarh have gained momentum, with both states preparing for the next Joint Technical Committee meeting on December 5, 2025.

The Tribunal is set to hear the matter on December 20, 2025, marking a crucial phase in the negotiations.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mukesh Mahaling informed the Odisha Assembly that six committee meetings have already been held, and discussions are continuing to identify possible solutions.

Legislator Durga Prasanna Nayak raised questions during Question Hour about the government’s steps, to which Mahaling responded that while the matter remains under Tribunal consideration, both states have initiated a process for mutual settlement.

Since the BJP assumed power in Chhattisgarh, Chief Ministers Vishnu Deo Sai and Mohan Charan Majhi have held informal talks.

The issue was also discussed at the Eastern Zonal Council meeting chaired by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, where both leaders reiterated their commitment to finding common ground.

On August 30, the Chief Secretaries of Odisha and Chhattisgarh prepared a framework for resolution. Since then, the Joint Technical Committee has convened six times, with officials optimistic that the upcoming meeting will help shape a roadmap for settlement.

The dispute, which has persisted for years, remains a sensitive issue for both states. However, recent developments suggest a renewed willingness to pursue dialogue and cooperation alongside the Tribunal process.
