Low Pressure Weakens, Odisha Braces for Thunderstorms
Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the well-marked low-pressure system over the southwest Bay of Bengal has weakened into a low-pressure area as of February 23, 2026.
The system is moving northeast and is expected to weaken further within the next 24 hours.
According to IMD, the associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 5.8 km above mean sea level, triggering unstable weather conditions across several districts of Odisha.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are likely to occur in isolated places across Malkangiri, Koraput, Nabarangpur, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, and Bhadrak.
Light rain or thunderstorms may also affect Sundargarh, Rayagada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Khordha, Puri, and Jajpur.
The IMD has advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, particularly in lightning-prone zones and regions susceptible to strong winds.
