Low Pressure Over Bay of Bengal: IMD Warns of Rough Seas, Fishermen Advised to Stay Ashore

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning after a low‑pressure area developed over the east Equatorial Indian Ocean and adjoining central parts of the south Bay of Bengal.

The system, influenced by an upper air cyclonic circulation, is expected to move west‑northwestwards and intensify further by February 18, becoming more marked over the southwest Bay of Bengal.

As a result, rough sea conditions are forecast across the southwest Bay of Bengal, east Equatorial Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka coast, Gulf of Mannar, and Comorin area between February 16–20.

Authorities have strongly advised fishermen not to venture into the sea during this period. Those already at sea are urged to return to the coast immediately to ensure safety. Coastal residents and maritime stakeholders are also being asked to remain vigilant and follow IMD updates closely.

The IMD emphasized that public safety remains the top priority as the weather system evolves.
